In 1960, the Bexar County made its bid for the new medical school being planned. $12.5 million bond issue was passed, $7.5 million for upgrading and expansion of the Robert B. Green and $5 million for the construction of a new teaching hospital. The bond issue was probably the last thing the people of the county agreed upon as far as the Hospital District was concerned. For the next 3 years, there was some controversy over the most preferred location for the new teaching hospital. One group secured sufficient land for both the new hospital and the medical school in the area adjacent to the Robert B. Green. However, the mayor and several local physicians owned 660 acres north of Oak Hills and they quite graciously offered free land for the medical school and the new teaching hospital in their 660 acre South Texas Medical Center. As is well known, this was the final site chosen. Construction of the medical school was completed in 1968, as was construction of the Bexar County Hospital. Bexar County Hospital 12
